How We Got Here
To put it bluntly, the unscripted TV production market is in freefall. In the UK nearly three quarters of of film and TV freelancers are currently out of work and half way through 2023, both of us knew that our careers were in jeopardy, so we started to scheme. In early 2024 Blue Hare Films UK was formed with the intention of creating online content for brands that we thought would align with what we were passionate about such as sustainability, renewable energies and conservation.
However, starting a business is slow and steady work and with the arrival of a baby coupled with no work we decided to move to Ireland and focus on home grown content. The Beara Peninsula is rugged and wild and holds so many stories, both people and wildlife based. It is the perfect location to base ourselves while we work on our own online short form content as well as forging connections with companies who we admire and would like to work with. We are also striving for linear TV content, so it is a very busy and creative start to our Irish adventure.
As sad and frustrating as it is to see your whole career path disintegrate, it did provide opportunity. The skills that we have both gained from working in specialist factual are invaluable. We have worked with some of the best cinematographers and creative minds in our industry and we are harnessing all of that, funnelling it into our own business. Want a story from a bug’s point of view? You got it. Drone and underwater work? We can help with that. Between us both, Blue Hare Films has producers, writers, directors, drone pilots, dive masters, set builders and camera operators. We also have a host of incredible friends/ contacts who can provide specialist skills if needed.
